Getting to Mount Desert Island can be an adventure… but once you get here, we have ideas about how to get around! Here are a few of our favorites.
Parking In Bar Harbor
Knowing where you can park and for how long is essential if you are spending some time in downtown Bar Harbor. Find maps and info distributed by the Town of Bar Harbor here: www.barharbormaine.gov/400/Parking-Information
Island Explorer Bus
This free shuttle bus service runs on Mount Desert Island. They have bike racks and run regular routes which you can check online, meaning you can start hiking or biking in one spot without having to loop back. Full routes and schedule here: www.exploreacadia.com
Route 3 Is Under Construction
We do want you to be aware, though, that we have an exciting project happening on the island that may lead to some delays in getting to Bar Harbor.
The main road, Route 3, which you’ll use to get to Bar Harbor, is undergoing a facelift. We’re getting better sidewalks, a multi-use path, paved shoulders on our roads and several new bus turnouts.
Much thought has gone into this project and we promise that detours have been designed to keep traffic flowing. If you find yourself caught up in a little bit of traffic, please know that it will be worth it!
There is a website specific to the construction project and you can even sign up for updates. Also, follow #BarHarborRt3 on any social media platform for updates. www.maine.gov/mdot/projects/barharbor/rt3/
Take A Ferry
A trip to the Cranberry Islands is a wonderful way to spend a day and with three regular ferries running, it’s easy to grab your bike and hop aboard. The ferry schedule and rates are here: www.cranberryisles.com/ferries
